Dark Winds: Season 4 (2026)

Dark Winds: Season 4 (2026) deepens the noir intensity and cultural richness of the series, once again following Navajo Nation police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and sergeant Jim Chee as they navigate crimes that blend modern danger with ancestral shadows. Set in the high desert of the late 1970s, the new season weaves together a web of murder, political corruption, and spiritual reckoning that tests the boundaries of loyalty, justice, and tradition.

The season opens with Leaphorn still reeling from the personal losses and moral compromises of Season 3. When a sacred Navajo artifact is stolen from a remote ceremonial site, the investigation quickly turns violent, with two tribal elders murdered under mysterious circumstances. The case pulls Leaphorn into a collision course with outside forces—oil prospectors, federal agents, and opportunistic criminals—all of whom have their own stake in the land and its hidden resources.

Meanwhile, Chee, now torn between his role as a tribal officer and his pull toward a more independent path, takes on a missing persons case that leads him deep into the reservation’s backcountry. There, he uncovers evidence that connects directly to Leaphorn’s murder investigation—and to a powerful figure from both men’s pasts.

Bernadette Manuelito faces her own challenges when she becomes the primary investigator in a case involving a series of violent robberies targeting trading posts. Her search for the culprits forces her to question how well she truly knows the people in her own community, and whether justice can be served without further fracturing trust among neighbors.

As the season progresses, the separate cases begin to intertwine, revealing a conspiracy involving corporate greed, government indifference, and the exploitation of Native lands. The tension escalates into a high-stakes showdown that blends procedural suspense with moments of supernatural unease, as traditional beliefs and visions warn the detectives of dangers beyond the physical realm.

In the season finale, Leaphorn and Chee must confront not only the truth behind the murders but the personal cost of their relentless pursuit of justice. Friendships are tested, lines are crossed, and the desert—beautiful, silent, and unforgiving—remains both sanctuary and battlefield.
